“General welding” usually refers to the most common methods used to join metals or to specific companies in the industry.

Common Welding Processes

• MIG (GMAW): Uses a wire spool and gas. It’s the fastest to learn and great for DIY or fabrication.
• TIG (GTAW): Uses a tungsten rod. It’s the most precise and produces the cleanest-looking welds, often used for aluminum or thin stainless steel.
• Stick (SMAW): The “old school” method using an electrode “stick.” It’s versatile and works best for heavy-duty outdoor repairs or rusty metal.
• Flux-Cored (FCAW): Similar to MIG but doesn’t need external gas. It’s preferred for thick materials and windy conditions.
